Man habe sich sogar geweigert, dem Spieler die Bonus-Zahlungen auszuzahlen. "In den Playoffs habe ich zwei Spiele verpasst, weil die Symptome so ernst waren. Der Chef, Dieter Knoll, war außer sich und konnte nicht verstehen, warum ich nicht spielte. Er hat sich danach auch geweigert, mir die Playoff-Prämien auszuzahlen. Seine Begründung war, dass eine Gehirnerschütterung kein Grund ist, um bei einem Spiel zu fehlen."
Der HC Bozen wollte sich bis dato nicht zu den Aussagen äußern, man werde die Situation genauestens prüfen und zu gegebenem Zeitpunkt eine Stellungnahme abgeben.
Smith hat zum Abschluss noch einen Rat an seine Eishockey-Kollegen: "Ich werde mich ewig an die Zeit in Bozen erinnern, an meine Teamkollegen, die Coaches und die Fans, die mir in dieser schwierigen Zeit geholfen haben. Ich hoffe nur, dass diese Symptome irgendwann verschwinden. Und ich hoffe inbrünstig, dass andere Spieler in Zukunft von solchen Umständen verschont bleiben. Ich rate deshalb jedem Spieler aus Übersee, seine Hausaufgaben zu machen und abzuchecken, zu welchem Verein man wechselt."
